Welcome

We are glad to invite you to MESO25, the Eleventh International Conference on the Mesolithic in Europe, which will take place in Ferrara (Italy) from 15th to 19th September 2025

For the first time, the MESO Conference is held in Italy and organised by the Section of Prehistoric and Anthropological Sciences of the Department of Human Studies, University of Ferrara. The chosen seat for the congress is Palazzo Giordani (Corso Ercole I d’Este 46, Ferrara, maps).

The University of Ferrara boasts an internationally known tradition in Mesolithic studies and research. For this reason, the University is glad to offer the chance for researchers, scholars and professionals from any country involved in the study of the Mesolithic to gather and discuss the most recent scientific updates and methodological approaches.

The proposed sessions will cover all aspects of Mesolithic archaeology, from the traditional field of material culture analysis to the innovative contributions of new methodologies.

The planned excursions will allow participants the chance to discover part of the rich Mesolithic heritage of Italy, a hinge region between central Europe and the Mediterranean world.

This Conference is dedicated to the memory of Grégor Marchand and Nicolas Valdeyron, two colleagues and dear friends who left us too early. Nicolas, in particular, was part of the MESO2025 Scientific Committee and, up to the last moment, worked with us to define the topics of the sessions and organise the Conference. Both were brilliant researchers who dedicated their professional lives to studying the Mesolithic and, in different ways, profoundly contributed to shaping our current understanding of the last prehistoric European hunter-gatherer-fishers.
